Instructions manuals

Ensuring safe and compliant use of your machines

Symbole: lire les instructions

An instruction manual is a mandatory regulatory document for any machine or industrial equipment placed on the market.

It enables operators to use, adjust, operate and maintain a machine safely, while ensuring compliance with applicable legal requirements.

What is an instruction manual used for?

An instruction manual is a tool for safety, understanding and accountability.
A well-designed instruction manual helps to:

01

Ensure safe use of the machine by
operators

02

Reduce the risk of accidents and improper handling

03

Communicate essential operating
instructions

04

Define normal and reasonably foreseeable operations

05

Meet the requirements of authorities and inspection bodies

06

Protect the manufacturer in the event of disputes or incidents

Regulatory compliance and legal requirements

  • The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC

  • EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which will enter into force on 20 January 2027 and will replace the existing directive for new machinery placed on the market.

  • Description of the machine and its functions

An instructions manual designed for real operating conditions

An instructions manual must be usable in real operating environments, not only compliant with regulatory requirements.

Writing is based on a thorough understanding of machine operation, user profiles and real usage scenarios. Safety messages are prioritised, instructions are clearly formulated and information is organised to support the operator throughout use.

Depending on the machine, the manual includes all information required for safe and controlled operation: equipment overview, functional descriptions, safety instructions, commissioning steps, operating procedures, shutdown procedures, user-authorised maintenance tasks, as well as standardised illustrations, diagrams and pictograms.

The objective is to guide users step by step, limit interpretation and ensure long-term safe use of the equipment.
